Does anyone famous come from Oklahoma? Mr. Oklahoma is Will Rogers. This man lived from November, 1879 to his tragic plane crash with Wiley Post at Point Barrow, AK in the 1930s. He was a Statesman, humorist, columnist, aviation pioneer, and all-around good guy. The late Carl Albert, once Speaker of the House in Washington, DC, is also from Oklahoma. He was from an area called Little Dixie.

Astronauts Gordon Cooper and Tom Stafford come from Oklahoma as does Shannon Lucid, William Pogue, Owen Garriott, and Stuart Roosa. Additionally, Oklahoma produced the first Native American member of the astronaut corp, John Herrington

Adventuresome Oklahomans don't stop at near space and the Moon. Oklahoman Donna Shirley designed the Martian exploration vehicle, Sojourner

Ballet dancers Maria and Marjorie Tallchief and Yvonne Chouteau Terekov come from this State

Musicians from Oklahoma are Woody Guthrie, Roger Miller, Patti Page, The Hansons, the late Hoyt Axton, Roy Clark, Carmen, Leon Russell, singer Gail Farrell (of Lawrence Welk Fame), Jeremy Castle, Reba McIntyre, Vince Gill, Garth Brooks are joined by other famous people with Oklahoma ties: Ron Howard, James Garner, Lon Chaney, Jr. (The Wolfman of movie fame), Tom Mix, Alfred Woodard, Dale Robertson, Wes Studi, and Gene Autry. While most of the early TV and movie stars were horse-riding, pistol totin' folks, the new ones, such as Chuck Norris (born in Ryan, OK) have long left that sterotype (except now in Walker, Texas Ranger, he uses a gun). 

Artists such as Willard Stone and Charles Banks Wilson come from OK as well as Pryor Creek's own Bill Rabbit. There is also a State Senator, Kelley Haney, who has established a name for himself as an artist. Ralph Ellison, the writer, was born in Oklahoma. 

Carrie Nation from Guthrie lead the fight for prohibition. Lynn Riggs wrote "Green Grow the Lilacs" which was used as a basis for the musical "Oklahoma". Patrick J. Hurley was an early Oklahoma attorney and diplomat. 

Famous athletes include Jim Thorpe, Wayman Tisdale, Johnny Bench, Mickey Mantle, Dizzy Dean, and Willie Stargell. Olympic great Shannon Miller is from OK as are the football stars Dewey, Leroy, and Lucius Selmon. Others include Billy Vessels, Billy Sims, and Steve Owens as well as those who grew up to be politians, J.C. Watts and Steve Largent. Marques Hayes, a Harlem Globetrotter, was born and educated in Oklahoma.

How could I forget Thurman Thomas (Miami Dolphins), Robin Ventura (Chicago White Sox), John Stark (NY Knicks), and Dennis Rodman? Olympic wrestler John Smith is also from here. 

Some notorious folks come from this State too. Belle Starr called the Winding Stair region of OK home. The Dalton Gang (deputies turned criminal) committed crimes in Kingfisher County. The James Gang robbed a train near Adair. Bonnie Parker, Clyde Barrow, and Pretty Boy Floyd all had relatives here and traveled freely in the State. Oklahombres is a site dedicated to the law men responsible for bringing these folks to justice. There is information regarding the criminal element in OK at this site as well.
